About

I am Kostas Skliamis. I hold a PhD in Criminology from the University of Amsterdam's Law Faculty and have a background in Political Science (BSc, MSc). Over the past decade, my research has focused on drug policy and the sociological aspects of drug use including stigmatization and normalization. In addition to my academic work, my passion for sociopolitical history and my love for Amsterdam -where I live since 2013- inspired me to develop this tour concept. My academic tendency to share knowledge with others led me to the creation of Amsterdam Walk & Learn, a part-time initiative aiming at sharing history-related knowledge with you, and creating a different perspective on the city to your visit in Amsterdam.

Genesis

The idea of 'Amsterdam Walk & Learn' was born during the COVID-19 pandemic. When I started walking daily through my neighborhood, I began to observe the surroundings more closely which sparked numerous questions. Seeking answers, I immersed myself in extensive research, delving into libraries, reading several books, and reviewing numerous articles on Amsterdam's history. I also explored the City Archives and gathered information from various musea across the country. By connecting these pieces of the puzzle, I developed a rich tapestry of stories throughout centuries about my neighborhood and its history. I am excited to share these stories with you!
